Six Party Talks
The Six Party talks are shared talks between six countries in the
aim of denuclearising North Korea. The countries involved in the talks
are;
The aim of the talks are to find a peaceful resolution to the
security concern of North Korea’s nuclear weapons program. Furthermore, the
recent need for the talks have emerged from North Korea withdrawing itself from
the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty of 2003. However, the talks have come to a
halt due to the recent sanctions placed on North Korea by all countries
involved in the talks, with North Korea pulling out of the talks to resume its
nuclear enrichment program.
The Six Party talks have been constantly stalled due to North
Korea’s need for aid whilst delaying the political process of denuclearising the
state. Furthermore, North Korea acts under the disguise of utilising it’s
nuclear power program for peaceful purposes however this contradicts with the
country preparing itself for war. (Chanlett-Avery & Rinehart,

What has the USA done?
USA has provided North Korea with aid in order to
speed the process of denuclearisation of the state.
Between 1995 and 2008, the USA provided North Korea 1.3 billion dollars
worth of food aid and energy assistance, to help with the food shortage and
energy shortage in the country. However, the provision of food aid within North
Korea is not equal, with each citizen receiving differing amounts of aid. The
government also restricts the work of donors and NGO’s in the country,
restricting the amount of aid that the USA can deliver. Furthermore, the USA
wishes to conduct talks with North Korea based on the missile program, criminal
and illicit activities and the abysmal human rights record of the country.
However, the USA and South Korea have become proactive,
conducting joint training programs in order to prepare for war against North
Korea following the North Korean test missile fired. North Korea has fired 3
missiles since the introduction of the Six Party Talks, each of them nuclear
tests and these were fired in 2006, 2009 and 2013. Following each missile
fired, Six Party Talks have halted along with the aid given by countries
involved. (Chanlett-Avery & Rinehart, 2013 )
