Figure 2.1 above outlines the key events that have happened over the course of North Korea's history from World War 2 and onwards. An analysis of the period 1994 - 2011 highlights how the reign of now deceased leader Kim Jong il had a drastic effect on not only the relations of North and South Korea but also relations with North Korea and the rest of the world. The armistice which ceased the fighting was broken by North Korea in 1996 when it decided to send troops into the DMZ and henceforth worsened the already tense relations between the two countries. Furthermore the statements and claims made by the North Korean capital Pyongyang regarding its nuclear weapons and capabilities have caused for widespread concerns and international outcry all collectively damaging not only the image of North Korea but its relations with different countries also. The ever present problem of North Korea's nuclear program is most notably evident during the 2000s as the North Koreans test fired long and short range missiles despite the international outcry
